Signs of ASD

Whereas in the earlier editions of the DSM, Autism was described as ‘classic autism’ or ‘autism disorder’ with no varying degrees of separation , the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-V) which was published in 2013, now identifies a range of the disorder from levels 1-3 mild to severe. Some symptoms on the spectrum can include:

  • Social struggles(making maintaining friendships, being understood, perceived as different, lack of reciprocity.
  • Anxiety
  • Academic challenges, specifically with reading and math comprehension
  • Black and white thinking
  • A tendency to be rigid, argumentative, possibly aggressive
  • Difficulty focusing and participating in undesired activities
  • Special interest/hyper focused
