Anxiety

Signs of Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders in children today. With the influence of the digital age, and let’s be honest, cell phones and video games, children are finding it much more difficult to regulate themselves and feel confident. Bullying is on the rise and much easier to do. Kids do not have to experience life “quiet or calm” as they are constantly inundated with information and essentially never alone to problem solve. Some symptoms of anxiety may look like,

  • Agitation
  • Restlessness
  • Inattention, poor focus
  • Somatic symptoms like headaches or stomach aches
  • Avoidance
  • Tantrums
  • Crying
  • Refusing to go to school
  • Meltdowns before school about clothing, hair, shoes, socks
  • Meltdowns after school about homework
  • Difficulties with transitions within school, and between school and an activity/sport
  • Difficulty settling down for bed
  • Having high expectations for school work, homework and sports performance
